This is a hand silkscreened print of the BBQ sauce map featured in The South Carolina BBQ Project book by Nathan Spainhour. It is based on a 1989 research project by professors Charles F. Kovacik and John J. Winberry of the University of South Carolina.
The image was originally made out of actual barbecue sauces poured into a wooden stencil, and then photographed (messy process, lol). This is a 3-color serigraph of the final image, hand printed in the artist's studio.
Nathan is a designer, artist, and writer from the Upstate of South Carolina. His work is about place, and how we remember it. His book, The South Carolina BBQ Project, began as his MFA thesis in Graphic Design and has since evolved into an ongoing documentation of barbecue’s visual culture – from signage and typography to architecture and everyday ephemera – situated within the broader history of Southern foodways.
